FERTILE FRAGMENTS

1994 was the UN designated International Year of the Family. The Adelaide Advertiser's art pages reviewed my exhibition at Greenhill Galleries. Adam Dutkiewicz says: "Whittam's Aboriginal subjects bring her sensitivity to the fore and there are several impressive works. Technically, Whittam is at her best when the under-drawing contributes complexity to the images rendered in larger, less fiddly washes of watercolor. The best on these terms is The Matriarch. While Land and Kin has great technical authority and finely balanced use of white space."

I found grandmothers hoping for their children and their grandchildren's future educational opportunities. I also found proud elders hoping for a sense of belonging for land and kin.
